What is doxycycline used for?
From the label: indications and usageTo reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain effectiveness of doxycycline capsules and other antibacterial drugs, doxycycline capsules should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. When culture and susceptibility information are available, they should be considered in selecting or modifying antibacterial therapy. In the absence of such data, local epidemiology and susceptibility patterns may contribute to the empiric selection of therapy. […]

Is there a generic for doxycycline (Vibramycin)?
The FDA approved the first generic doxycycline on June 18, 1973. 120 generic applications are approved; 70 of them carry a current (not discontinued) marketing status in Drugs@FDA; that status is not evidence that the generic is on sale. Drugs@FDA also holds 5 tentative approvals: the FDA found the generic approvable, but patents or exclusivity keep it from final approval for now.
FDA's NDC Directory lists doxycycline from 83 labelers under a generic (ANDA) application and from 4 brand labelers. A listing means the company has registered the product for sale; it does not show that every pharmacy stocks it.
The Orange Book lists no patent for Vibramycin for oral suspension; a patent listed only for Doryx tablets runs to December 23, 2034. A patent or exclusivity date is not the date a generic goes on sale: court cases and settlements move it either way.
- 1967 earliest approval on file
- 1973 first generic approved
- 2034 last listed patent

What do pharmacies pay for doxycycline (Vibramycin)?
In CMS's NADAC survey of October 7, 2026, pharmacies paid $0.118 per Doxycycline hyclate 100 mg tablet, down 2% from $0.121 on October 8, 2025. Prices per unit in the table differ many-fold by strength, form and brand, so compare like with like. The chart's scale runs from the lowest to the highest price shown, not from zero. NADAC is what retail pharmacies paid their wholesalers, per unit, in CMS's monthly survey; what a patient pays depends on insurance and the pharmacy.

Has doxycycline been recalled?
The FDA's Enforcement Report lists 22 recalls naming doxycycline since 2013: 0 Class I (the most serious), 21 Class II, 1 Class III; 1 still ongoing. 3 of them are by firms that FDA's NDC Directory does not list as a maker of doxycycline and that hold no application for it in Drugs@FDA, such as compounding pharmacies or bulk-ingredient suppliers; the recall notice names the product recalled. A recall names products and lots, not every product of the medicine.

|---|---|---|---|
| September 29, 2025 | Class II | Acella Pharmaceuticals, LLC | Failed dissolution specifications: Stability testing found that the lot did not meet dissolution specifications. |

What does the doxycycline label say about other medicines?
The doxycycline label names 7 other medicines in its interaction, contraindication or warning sections. The labels of 17 other medicines name doxycycline. The sentences are the labels' own; a label lists what its studies and reports found, not every interaction.
| Medicine named | Section | What the label says |
|---|---|---|
| Acitretin | drug interactions | Since both oral retinoids, including isotretinoin and acitretin, and the tetracyclines, primarily minocycline, can cause increased intracranial pressure, the concurrent use of an oral retinoid and a tetracycline should be avoided. |
| Bismuth subsalicylate | drug interactions | … tetracyclines, including doxycycline hyclate is impaired by antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium, bismuth subsalicylate and iron-containing preparations. ( 7.3 ) Concurrent use of tetracyclines, including doxycycline hyclate may render oral contraceptives less effective. … |
| Carbamazepine | drug interactions | … tetracyclines, including doxycycline hyclate may render oral contraceptives less effective. ( 7.4 ) Barbiturates, carbamazepine and phenytoin decrease the half-life of doxycycline. |
| Isotretinoin | warnings | Concomitant use of isotretinoin and doxycycline capsules should be avoided because isotretinoin is also known to cause pseudotumor cerebri. |
| Minocycline | drug interactions | Since both oral retinoids, including isotretinoin and acitretin, and the tetracyclines, primarily minocycline, can cause increased intracranial pressure, the concurrent use of an oral retinoid and a tetracycline should be avoided. |
| Phenytoin | drug interactions | … doxycycline hyclate may render oral contraceptives less effective. ( 7.4 ) Barbiturates, carbamazepine and phenytoin decrease the half-life of doxycycline. |
| Tetracycline | warnings | WARNINGS The use of drugs of the tetracycline class, including doxycycline, during tooth development (last half of pregnancy, infancy and childhood to the age of 8 years) may cause permanent discoloration of the teeth (yellow-gray-brown). |

What do FAERS reports show for doxycycline?
The FDA Adverse Event Reporting System holds 69,571 reports that list doxycycline among the medicines taken, through July 30, 2026, each a report of something that happened, not proof the medicine caused it; 6,819 are coded as a death and 22,202 as a hospital stay. Counts follow how widely a medicine is used and watched, and they are not a measure of how risky it is.
