Is there a generic for rimantadine (Flumadine)?

The FDA approved the first generic rimantadine on November 2, 2001. 3 generic applications are approved; 1 of them carries a current (not discontinued) marketing status in Drugs@FDA; that status is not evidence that the generic is on sale.

FDA's NDC Directory lists rimantadine from 1 labeler under a generic (ANDA) application. A listing means the company has registered the product for sale; it does not show that every pharmacy stocks it.

  • 2001 first generic approved

What does the rimantadine label say about other medicines?

The rimantadine label names 4 other medicines in its interaction, contraindication or warning sections. The labels of 1 other medicine name rimantadine. The sentences are the labels' own; a label lists what its studies and reports found, not every interaction.

Medicine namedSectionWhat the label says
Acetaminophendrug interactionsCo-administration with acetaminophen reduced the peak concentration and AUC values for rimantadine by approximately 11%.
AmantadinecontraindicationsCONTRAINDICATIONS Rimantadine hydrochloride tablet is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to drugs of the adamantane class, including rimantadine and amantadine.
Aspirindrug interactionsPeak plasma concentrations and AUC of rimantadine were reduced approximately 10% in the presence of aspirin.
Cimetidinedrug interactionsWhen a single 100 mg dose of rimantadine hydrochloride was administered with steady-state cimetidine (300 mg four times a day), there were no statistically significant differences in rimantadine C max or AUC between rimantadine hydrochloride alone and rimantadine hydrochloride in the presence of cimetdine.

Counts follow how widely a medicine is used and watched, and they are not a measure of how risky it is.

3 other medicines are given the same way (oral) and in the same FDA class as rimantadine or labeled mainly for the same use (influenza), the same class first. Influenza lists all 5 medicines labeled for it, by any route. They are listed as records, not as substitutes: whether one can replace another is a prescriber's decision.
