Is there a generic for ropivacaine (Naropin)?

The FDA approved the first generic ropivacaine on July 17, 2014. 16 generic applications are approved; 14 of them carry a current (not discontinued) marketing status in Drugs@FDA; that status is not evidence that the generic is on sale.

FDA's NDC Directory lists ropivacaine from 18 labelers under a generic (ANDA) application and from 2 brand labelers. A listing means the company has registered the product for sale; it does not show that every pharmacy stocks it.

The Orange Book lists 1 patent for Naropin injection, the last expiring on November 28, 2026. A patent or exclusivity date is not the date a generic goes on sale: court cases and settlements move it either way.

Has ropivacaine been recalled?

The FDA's Enforcement Report lists 9 recalls naming ropivacaine since 2017: 1 Class I (the most serious), 8 Class II, 0 Class III; 3 still ongoing. 5 of them are by firms that FDA's NDC Directory does not list as a maker of ropivacaine and that hold no application for it in Drugs@FDA, such as compounding pharmacies or bulk-ingredient suppliers; the recall notice names the product recalled. A recall names products and lots, not every product of the medicine.

What does the ropivacaine label say about other medicines?

The ropivacaine label names 31 other medicines in its interaction, contraindication or warning sections. The labels of 11 other medicines name ropivacaine. The sentences are the labels' own; a label lists what its studies and reports found, not every interaction.

Medicine namedSectionWhat the label says
Acetaminophendrug interactionsClass: Other drugs; Examples: acetaminophen, metoclopramide, quinine, sulfasalazine
Amiodaronedrug interactionsSpecific trials studying the interaction between ropivacaine and class III antiarrhythmic drugs (e.g., amiodarone) have not been performed, but caution is advised [see Warnings and Precautions ( 5.13 )].
Benzocainedrug interactionsClass: Local anesthetics; Examples: articaine, benzocaine, bupivacaine, lidocaine, mepivacaine, prilocaine, procaine, ropivacaine, tetracaine
Bupivacainedrug interactionsClass: Local anesthetics; Examples: articaine, benzocaine, bupivacaine, lidocaine, mepivacaine, prilocaine, procaine, ropivacaine, tetracaine
Chloroquinedrug interactionsClass: Antimalarials; Examples: chloroquine, primaquine
Cyclophosphamidedrug interactionsClass: Antineoplastic agents; Examples: cyclophosphamide, flutamide, hydroxyurea, ifosfamide, rasburicase
Dapsonedrug interactionsClass: Antibiotics; Examples: dapsone, nitrofurantoin, para-aminosalicylic acid, sulfonamides
Epinephrinewarnings and precautionsWhen clinical conditions permit, consideration should be given to employing local anesthetic solutions, which contain epinephrine for the test dose because circulatory changes compatible with epinephrine may also serve as a warning sign of unintended intravascular injection.
Flutamidedrug interactionsClass: Antineoplastic agents; Examples: cyclophosphamide, flutamide, hydroxyurea, ifosfamide, rasburicase
Fluvoxaminedrug interactionsIn vivo, the plasma clearance of ropivacaine was reduced by 70% during coadministration of fluvoxamine (25 mg bid for 2 days), a selective and potent CYP1A2 inhibitor.
Hydroxyureadrug interactionsClass: Antineoplastic agents; Examples: cyclophosphamide, flutamide, hydroxyurea, ifosfamide, rasburicase
Ifosfamidedrug interactionsClass: Antineoplastic agents; Examples: cyclophosphamide, flutamide, hydroxyurea, ifosfamide, rasburicase
Imipraminedrug interactionsPossible interactions with drugs known to be metabolized by CYP1A2 via competitive inhibition such as theophylline and imipramine may also occur.
Ketoconazoledrug interactionsCoadministration of a selective and potent inhibitor of CYP3A4, ketoconazole (100 mg bid for 2 days with ropivacaine infusion administered 1 hour after ketoconazole) caused a 15% reduction in in vivo plasma clearance of ropivacaine.

What do FAERS reports show for ropivacaine?

The FDA Adverse Event Reporting System holds 2,349 reports that list ropivacaine among the medicines taken, through July 30, 2026, each a report of something that happened, not proof the medicine caused it; 118 are coded as a death and 642 as a hospital stay. Counts follow how widely a medicine is used and watched, and they are not a measure of how risky it is.
