Boxed warning

NOT FOR TREATMENT OF OBESITY OR FOR WEIGHT LOSS.

Thyroid hormones, including SYNTHROID, either alone or with other therapeutic agents, should not be used for the treatment of obesity or for weight loss. In euthyroid patients, doses within the range of daily hormonal requirements are ineffective for weight reduction. Larger doses may produce serious or even life - threatening manifestations of toxicity, particularly when given in association with sympathomimetic amines such as those used for their anorectic effects [see Adverse Reactions ( 6 ), Drug Interactions ( 7.7 ), and Overdosage ( 10 )]. WARNING: NOT FOR TREATMENT OF OBESITY OR FOR WEIGHT LOSS See full prescribing information for complete boxed warning. Thyroid hormones, including SYNTHROID , should not be used for the treatment of obesity or for weight loss. Doses beyond the range of daily hormonal requirements may produce serious or even life - threatening manifestations of toxicity ( 6 , 10 ).

The FDA-approved Medication Guide or Patient Information that comes with the medicine, in its own words.

From the patient leaflet: What is the most important information I should know about LEVOXYL?

Do not use LEVOXYL to treat weight problems or weight loss. Do not take more LEVOXYL than your healthcare provider prescribes for you to take. Over dosage or taking too much LEVOXYL may cause life-threatening side effects or death.

Is there a generic for levothyroxine (Synthroid)?

The FDA approved the first generic levothyroxine on June 5, 2002. 20 generic applications are approved; 11 of them carry a current (not discontinued) marketing status in Drugs@FDA; that status is not evidence that the generic is on sale.

FDA's NDC Directory lists levothyroxine from 36 labelers under a generic (ANDA) application and from 19 brand labelers. A listing means the company has registered the product for sale; it does not show that every pharmacy stocks it.

The Orange Book lists no patent for Synthroid tablets; a patent listed only for Tirosint-Sol oral solution runs to September 26, 2044. A patent or exclusivity date is not the date a generic goes on sale: court cases and settlements move it either way.

What do pharmacies pay for levothyroxine (Synthroid)?

In CMS's NADAC survey of October 7, 2026, pharmacies paid $0.0588 per Levothyroxine 112 mcg tablet, down 12% from $0.0665 on October 8, 2025. Prices per unit in the table differ many-fold by strength, form and brand, so compare like with like. The chart's scale runs from the lowest to the highest price shown, not from zero. NADAC is what retail pharmacies paid their wholesalers, per unit, in CMS's monthly survey; what a patient pays depends on insurance and the pharmacy.

Has levothyroxine been recalled?

The FDA's Enforcement Report lists 130 recalls naming levothyroxine since 2012: 0 Class I (the most serious), 128 Class II, 2 Class III; 61 still ongoing. 2 of them are by firms that FDA's NDC Directory does not list as a maker of levothyroxine and that hold no application for it in Drugs@FDA, such as compounding pharmacies or bulk-ingredient suppliers; the recall notice names the product recalled. A recall names products and lots, not every product of the medicine.

What does the levothyroxine label say about other medicines?

The levothyroxine label names 38 other medicines in its interaction, contraindication or warning sections. The labels of 24 other medicines name levothyroxine. The sentences are the labels' own; a label lists what its studies and reports found, not every interaction.

Medicine namedSectionWhat the label says
Amiodaronedrug interactionsOther drugs: Amiodarone; Amiodarone inhibits peripheral conversion of levothyroxine (T4) to triiodothyronine (T3) and may cause isolated biochemical changes (increase in serum free-T4, and decreased or normal free-T3) in clinically euthyroid patients.
Amitriptylinedrug interactionsConcurrent use of tricyclic (e.g., amitriptyline) or tetracyclic (e.g., maprotiline) antidepressants and SYNTHROID may increase the therapeutic and toxic effects of both drugs, possibly due to increased receptor sensitivity to catecholamines.
Asparaginasedrug interactionsAndrogens / Anabolic Steroids Asparaginase Glucocorticoids Slow-Release Nicotinic Acid These drugs may decrease serum TBG concentration.
Biotindrug interactionsBiotin Biotin supplementation is known to interfere with thyroid hormone immunoassays that are based on a biotin and streptavidin interaction, which may result in erroneous thyroid hormone test results.

What do FAERS reports show for levothyroxine?

The FDA Adverse Event Reporting System holds 300,456 reports that list levothyroxine among the medicines taken, through July 30, 2026, each a report of something that happened, not proof the medicine caused it; 19,275 are coded as a death and 85,074 as a hospital stay. Counts follow how widely a medicine is used and watched, and they are not a measure of how risky it is.
