What is sodium zirconium cyclosilicate used for?

From the label: indications and usage

LOKELMA is indicated for the treatment of hyperkalemia in adults. Limitation of Use LOKELMA should not be used as an emergency treatment for life-threatening hyperkalemia because of its delayed onset of action [see Clinical Pharmacology (12.2) and Clinical Studies (14) ]. Is there a generic for sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (Lokelma)?

The FDA approved the first generic sodium zirconium cyclosilicate on August 7, 2026. 1 generic application is approved; 1 of it carries a current (not discontinued) marketing status in Drugs@FDA; that status is not evidence that the generic is on sale. Drugs@FDA also holds 1 tentative approval: the FDA found the generic approvable, but patents or exclusivity keep it from final approval for now.

The Orange Book lists 14 patents for Lokelma for oral suspension: the compound patent runs to October 14, 2035. A patent or exclusivity date is not the date a generic goes on sale: court cases and settlements move it either way.

What do pharmacies pay for sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (Lokelma)?

In CMS's NADAC survey of October 7, 2026, pharmacies paid $28.33 per packet (Lokelma 10 gram powder packet), up 3% from $27.54 on October 8, 2025. The chart's scale runs from the lowest to the highest price shown, not from zero.
