Azithromycin and nevirapine
Nevirapine's FDA label of July 15, 2026 names azithromycin in its drug interactions section; the azithromycin labels PlainMeds reads (4) do not name nevirapine. What does the nevirapine label say about azithromycin?
Nevirapine label, drug interactionsDrug Name: Antibiotics: Clarithromycin; Effect on Concentration of Nevirapine or Concomitant Drug: ↓ Clarithromycin ↑ 14-OH clarithromycin; Clinical Comment: Clarithromycin exposure was significantly decreased by nevirapine; however, 14-OH metabolite concentrations were increased. Because clarithromycin active metabolite has reduced activity against Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex, overall activity against this pathogen may be altered. Alternatives to clarithromycin, such as azithromycin, should be considered.
